‘Music Day’ celebrated

Pakistan celebrated World Music Day  with an aim to propagating greater knowledge of art, arid for the strengthening of the bonds of peace and friendship between people through music.

World Music Day is a music festival also known as ‘Fete de la Musique’. ‘Fete de la Musique’ firstly took place in England, but now World Music Day is spread over the entire globe. ‘Fete de la Musique’ is actually a Lebanese music festival, and was firstly initiated by France. This popular event began in 1982 when the French Minister of Culture Jack Lang declared June 21 as ‘Fete de la Musique’. The significance of June 21 lies in the fact that it is also the first day of summer in France, the day of the Summer Solstice and the `longest day of the year’ when the sun sets well after 9.00 pm. On this day whole of France literally blasts into one big musical extravaganza with both amateur and professional performances taking place everywhere in France. On World music day, Spokesman PNCA told APP that they invite leading composers, interpreters and musicologists to give lectures, to speak of the importance of music and of its place in modern life.

He said “We organise meetings of artists, competitions and musical quizzes, organize exhibitions of musical instruments, records, posters, paintings, sculptures, caricatures, or photographs on musical themes”.

Spokesman PNCA further said that they invite delegations of musicians to participate in this International Music Day, and the winners are given prizes as well.“If you can have a Father’s Day and Teacher’s Day, you can also have a World Music Day for sure. After all, music is a force that binds us together and it would be fitting to pay a tribute to it”, he maintained. The intention of this day is to encourage the promotion of musical art among all sections of society; the application of the Unesco ideals of peace and friendship between peoples, of the evolution of their cultures, of the exchange of experience and of the mutual appreciation of their aesthetic values.

CityFM89 also celebrated the annual World Music Day by hosting a musical concert. The concert aimed to encourage the promotion of musical art across all sections of Pakistan’s society. More than 15 music bands participated in CityFM89’s World Music Day concert held simultaneously in Karachi, Lahore and Faisalabad. It was the biggest concert of the summer, which electrified audiences and gave a chance to all the performers to bring their music to the public.

Since 2007 CityFM89’s World Music Day concert has enjoyed enormous success with participants such as Karisma, ADP, Mauj, Farhad Hamayun, Symt, Lagan, Shehzad Hameed and Leon Menezes.
